How do you change out a swimming pool light?

I've been having issues with my pool light. I have a remote control that can plug in anywhere in the house. However, every time I press the button, the light never comes on. You hear a flutter sound as if it's trying to light, but it never does. Right now, I wouldn't be surprised if the bulb is bad anyway. So, for now, I'm wondering how the light can be changed. Please help, thanks! How do you change out a swimming pool light?Sounds like an X10 remote system.

Can you manually turn on the light to verify operation? Is the GFI for the light working properly?

No sense in replacing a light that is perfectly functioning.

Most pool lights use 110 volts to operate and are similar to a regular lighting circuit in a house, except a pool light is in a sealed waterproof housing and should have enough cord wrapped around the light to remove the light housing and set on the deck to disassemble and install the new light and lens seal. Best to down load your light makers owners manual from the internet. Instructions will show the correct alignment of the lens to housing and how to install the housing to lens bracket.

Examine your existing light without removing the housing from the niche. Does it have water in it? Visible from across the pool or in the water with a swim mask. If so surprisingly the light may operate with some water in it up to 1/2 full but its life is very short.

Turn off sub panel breakers for light and to be extra safe the house panel breakers to the equipment sub panel.

Remove screw attaching housing to niche. This can be done in the water or from the deck above the light. Light will be full of air and quite buoyant so be careful it does not pop to the surface. Remove retaining cage and note alignment of lens/retaining cage/housing and mark with a felt pen. Separate lens and set aside, note seal and it is a good practice to replace seal with new one. Also many units are sealed with epoxy potting compound around the light socket and the bottom of the cone shaped housing. These can sometimes leak, if so then the whole light housing and cord need replacement as one unit. Test by removing light and gently floating the housing in the water, after a couple of minutes you should not see any water in housing.

Typically the electrical connection is made from the light to a Junction box. This J Box can be located in the proximity of the light, 5 feet to water or at your equipment pad or any where between. If you find it this is where the electrical connections are made. Most light cables are three wire, white, black and green/yellow stripe.

If the light housing needs to be replaced you may be able to use your old light cord to pull a pull cord through then attach to the new cord at the pool light niche. Gently pull the cord feeding it into the fitting on the light niche until it comes out of the J Box. Trim the cord after allowing enough extra to allow the light to sit comfortably on the deck above the light niche. When connection is duplicated to the old you can put the light back in the niche. Test in the water or in the air for only several seconds. The lights get really hot and need the pool water to cool them. They will catch fire if left on in air too long so be careful.

After realizing how much work this is you may have wondered why you did not upgrade the light to an LED or SAM light. Yup, installed the same way.

You're welcome!!How do you change out a swimming pool light?the bulb should have a cover on it that unsnaps or unscrews.call a qualified pool repairer it could be tricky for you to do it,also tell him to check the plug connection it sounds like a lose wire to me.How do you change out a swimming pool light?most all pool lights i have changed come in a sealed unit, power cord and all,you can use the old power cord to pull the new one through, just tape it to the new one and use it as a snake to pull the new cord through, make sure you drain the pool below the pool light unless you intend on having a proff. diver to do it for you, these things can get tricky and dangerous, but the light and power cord comes as a sealed unit so you will have to cut the light off the old one and just follow the above instructions, but before you go to all that trouble have all your power sources checked and make sure you don't have a short or loose wire some whereHow do you change out a swimming pool light? The bulb itself is low voltage and sealed in a waterproof case. Just remove the whole thing unplug the low voltage connect and get it to a dry area. That or drain the pool.
